Duane received a degree in economics from the University of North Carolina in 1976 and received his law degree from the University of Virginia in 1979. He began his legal career with Greenebaum, Doll & McDonald (now Bingham Greenebaum Doll) in Louisville, was a partner at Brown Todd & Heyburn (now Frost Brown Todd) in Lexington and was a shareholder and managing director of Newberry Hargrove & Rambicure, also in Lexington. Duane had a successful solo practice for 18 years before founding Duane Cook & Associates in 2011.
Duane represents a variety of businesses and entrepreneurs, including lenders, venture capital firms, manufacturers, developers, law firms, and energy producers. His practice includes business litigation, federal and state appeals, sales and acquisitions, secured lending, drafting and administration of business contracts, and nearly all the legal issues confronting his business clients.
Duane has been selected by his peers for inclusion in the 2019 Edition of The Best Lawyers in America for his work in the area of Business Organizations (including LLCs and Partnerships).

John grew up on his family's cattle and tobacco farm in Harrison County. He is a 2008 Graduate of Georgetown College where he double-majored in History and Political Science with a minor in Security Studies. John received his law degree in 2011 from the University of Kentucky. While there, John was a member of UK's National Moot Court Team and the Evan A. Evans Competition Constitutional Law Moot Court Team.
John is an Adjunct Professor of Political Science at Georgetown College where he teaches courses in Constitutional Law and Trial Advocacy. John's practice focuses on business litigation, collections, agribusiness law, estate planning, and real estate transactions. He is admitted to practice in Kentucky and in the United States District Court for the Eastern and Western Districts of Kentucky and the Southern District of Indiana.
John and his wife own a farm in Scott County.

Jason Obermeyer is a 2010 graduate of the University Of Kentucky College Of Law, where he was awarded the Order of the Coif and served as technical editor of the Kentucky Journal of Equine, Agriculture and Natural Resources Law. In addition to his work with this firm, Jason managed is own sole practice. He has experience in commercial transactions and litigation, business formations, business sales and purchases, taxation, bankruptcy, estate planning and probate.
Jason has also worked in the property management field. Jason's experience in private business gives him perspective on how the contracts our firm drafts operate to advance our clients' interests. During law school, Jason worked with the IRS Chief Counsel’s office and the Office of the United States Trustee.

Benjamin H. Watkins
Benjamin H. Watkins, ("Ben") is a founder and owner of Cook & Watkins PLC and native of Louisville, Kentucky, practicing from our Louisville office. Ben graduated from Louisville's DuPont Manual High School in 2002, Lexington Kentucky's Transylvania University in 2006 (majoring in political science and minoring in business administration), and from the University of Louisville Louis D. Brandeis School of Law in 2009. After sitting
for and passing the summer 2009 Bar exam, Ben began practicing as an attorney with Mosley, Sauer, Townes & Watkins, PLLC in 2009, where he benefitted from the experience of practicing alongside and being mentored by his father, attorney Stephen Watkins. Ben successfully handles divorce, real estate, eviction, general contract and negotiation, and corporate law matters, but focuses his practice especially on the related areas of estate and tax planning and probate administration. Ben is a member of the Estate Planning Council of Louisville, loves tailoring estate and tax plans to each unique person, family, or small business, and believes that experience, legal and local knowledge, a diverse legal background, and compassion allow him to give exceptional representation to probate clients. Ben is an extremely proud husband and father and is a family focused person. He and family are members of Highland Presbyterian Church in Louisville.
Stephen A. Watkins
Stephen A. Watkins ("Steve") was born in Roanoke, Virginia. He earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1974 from Centre College of Kentucky. He received his Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Virginia in 1978 and was admitted to the Kentucky Bar on October 18, 1978. Steve is also admitted to practice law before the United States Supreme Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, and the United States District Courts for both Eastern and Western Kentucky.
Steve is a current member and former Chairperson of the Probate and Trust Law Section of the Kentucky Bar Association. He is a former member and former Chairperson of the Section’s Legislative Committee, which works for improvements in Kentucky statutory law in these areas. He is a former Chairperson of the Estate Planning and Probate Committee of the Louisville Bar Association. He is a current member, former Director, and former President of the Estate Planning Council of Louisville.
Steve is a current volunteer, former Advocacy Chairperson, and former Director of the American Heart Association, Ohio Valley Affiliate.
Marion Cook has been married to Duane since 1980 and has been involved in his law practice for more than 20 years. She is a graduate of the University of Virginia, with both bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and is currently handling all bookkeeping for the law firm.
Abigail Jacob is our office manager and technology guru. Abby is the daughter of Duane Cook and has worked with her father since college, when she worked in his office during the summer. She attended Vassar College and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Savannah College of Art and Design.
Abby is a certified Kentucky paralegal.
Carole Craddock is our Records Manager and Assistant to Mr.Cook. Carole is a native Kentuckian and grew up here in Georgetown. She moved to the Washington, DC area shortly after graduating from high school, where she worked in a variety of administrative positions including in a high profile law firm near Capitol Hill. She has worked in records management in a variety of positions including managing the membership department of a large
nonprofit organization and managing records for the engineering and public works department of the town of Leesburg, Virginia. She then trained as a medical transcriptionist, moved back home to Kentucky, and had her own medical transcription business for over ten years before joining the staff at Duane Cook and Associates. Carole is a classically trained pianist, but loves the blues, and was once recognized in a reader's poll as one of Washington, DC's top blues musicians.
Paul H. Watkins
Paul H. Watkins ("Paul") is the son of Steve Watkins, brother of Ben Watkins, and is the Louisville office's paralegal, office manager, records manager, and technology guru. He was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky and is extremely experienced with estate planning and probate cases, having worked with his father since 2005 and with his brother since 2009.
